But for anyone who has ever wondered what it actually means — what the process looks like, whether soil-free growing is genuinely better or just a marketing angle, and why it matters where your greens come from in Singapore — this is the full answer. No fluff. Just the real picture.
Growing Without Soil Is Not a Shortcut.
It's an Upgrade.
In an aeroponic farm, plant roots hang freely in mid-air inside a sealed growing chamber. They are misted at regular intervals with a fine nutrient solution — water carrying everything the plant needs to grow. No soil. No substrate. Just roots, oxygen, and mist.
This is not experimental. NASA has been researching aeroponic systems since the 1990s for growing food in space, precisely because soil is not available there and the method works. Decades of data since then confirm the same finding: roots with direct access to oxygen absorb nutrients faster and more completely than roots buried in compacted earth.
For Singapore, this matters more than almost anywhere else. Less than 1% of the country's land is available for agriculture — and that figure has halved over the last two decades as the country has grown. Land-based farming here is not just expensive; at the scale needed to feed a city of six million, it is not a realistic option for most crops.
Aeroponic systems change that equation entirely. Plants grow vertically in stacked chambers rather than spread horizontally across a field, meaning the same footprint produces ten to fifteen times more yield than conventional farming. We grow more, in less space, without a single patch of earth. In Singapore, that is the only version of truly local farming that scales.

Here Is Why That Number Is Real.
Conventional soil farming loses water at every stage. It evaporates from the surface. It drains through the ground before roots can absorb it. It runs off during irrigation. The plant captures only a fraction of what is applied — the rest is gone.
In aeroponics, water is delivered as a fine mist directly onto the roots at precisely timed intervals. Excess is captured and recirculated back into the system. There is no open field to evaporate from. No runoff. Nothing wasted. Every drop goes where it is needed and gets used again.

Every box of greens you receive consumed a fraction of the water a conventional farm would have used to grow the same crop. That gap is real, measurable, and it compounds every week.
No Pesticides — Not Because We Skipped a Step,
But Because There Is Nothing to Spray For.
The most common assumption is that pesticide-free is a label, not a reality. So here is the actual reason it is possible.
Most agricultural pests and plant pathogens do not appear from nowhere. They come from soil, from outdoor insects, from open-air exposure. Remove those entry points and you remove the problem at its source. Our growing chambers are sealed environments — no open sky, no soil harbouring bacteria or fungi, physical barriers that keep the external environment out entirely.
The USDA's Agricultural Research Service has confirmed this independently: crops grown in controlled indoor environments can often be grown without pesticides and are significantly less likely to be contaminated by pathogens harmful to humans.
This does not mean the environment manages itself. It means the design makes pesticides unnecessary — not because we chose to skip them, but because there is genuinely nothing to treat. The conditions that create pest problems in outdoor farming simply do not exist inside our chambers.
